Short version. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — not Switch 2, and not PC at launch. Before preordering any big game, check the platform, the edition, the rating, the storage space and the retailer's preorder terms.
Few games have been as anticipated as Grand Theft Auto VI, the first new mainline Grand Theft Auto since 2013. Rockstar delayed it twice, from 2025 to May 2026 and then to November 19, 2026, which Take-Two has repeatedly reaffirmed. Here's what to consider, whether you're buying it or another major release.
1. Check the platform
GTA VI is announced for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A Switch 2 or a PC won't run it at launch. If you're buying a console for it, see our console comparison.
2. Check the rating
Previous mainline Grand Theft Auto games were all rated M (Mature 17+). Check the final ESRB rating and descriptors for GTA VI before buying for anyone younger. Our ESRB guide explains what to look for.
3. Understand the editions
Big releases often come in several editions:
- Standard edition — the game.
- Deluxe or special editions — the game plus digital extras, sometimes early access.
- Collector's editions — physical extras such as art books or statues, usually limited and sold out early.
Compare what each edition actually adds. Digital extras are often minor; collector's editions are about the physical items.
4. Preorder terms
- When are you charged? Some retailers take payment when you order, some at shipping, and in-store preorders may take a deposit.
- Can you cancel? Check the policy, especially for collector's editions.
- Preorder bonuses are usually small digital items. Nice, but not a reason to choose one retailer over another.
- Physical vs digital: physical can be traded in later (see physical vs digital); digital preorders can usually be pre-loaded so you can play right at launch.
5. Make room
Large open-world games can be very big downloads, and physical copies install to the console too. Free up space in advance or consider extra storage. Download any day-one update the night before.
6. Plan for online
Many big releases include an online mode that requires PlayStation Plus or Game Pass. Check before launch day.
Other launches this season
Holiday seasons are crowded with releases. Rather than chase every launch-day purchase, consider which games you'll actually play in the next month. Prices for most games drop over time, and pre-owned copies follow quickly — except for the very biggest titles, which tend to hold their price longer.
