PS5, PS5 Digital Edition or PS5 Pro? Every PlayStation 5 model explained

Short version. Most buyers should get the standard PS5 with a disc drive: it plays physical games (which you can resell or trade in) and costs much less than the Pro. Choose the Digital Edition only if every game will be bought from the PlayStation Store. The PS5 Pro is for players with a 4K TV who care about sharper image quality and smoother frame rates — and it does not include a disc drive.

Sony has sold several versions of the PlayStation 5 since 2020, and the current line-up is easy to mix up. The good news: every model plays the same PS5 library, uses the same controller and the same PlayStation Plus subscription. The differences are about discs, storage and image quality.

The current models

Model Disc drive Storage Who it's for
PS5 (disc) Built in 1TB Most households; anyone who wants physical games
PS5 Digital Edition No (add-on drive available) Has varied by production run — check the box All-digital players who never buy discs
PS5 Pro No (add-on drive available) 2TB Enthusiasts with a 4K TV who want the best image

The "Slim" name you'll see in older listings refers to the smaller redesign that replaced the launch model in late 2023. If you are buying new today, you are getting the slimmer design.

Disc or digital: the decision that matters most

The disc model costs more up front, but it pays that back for many households:

  • Physical games can be traded in, resold or lent. Digital purchases are tied to your account forever.
  • Physical copies are often discounted by retailers, and pre-owned copies are cheaper still.
  • Gifting is easier. A game in a box is a present; a digital code is an email.

The Digital Edition makes sense for someone who already buys everything digitally, uses PlayStation Plus's game catalog heavily, or is sure they'll never want a disc. If they change their mind later, Sony sells a separate Disc Drive that attaches to the Digital Edition and the Pro. It works, but it usually costs more than the price gap between the two consoles — so if in doubt, buy the disc model.

What the PS5 Pro adds

The PS5 Pro launched in November 2024. It plays exactly the same games as other PS5 models, but has a stronger graphics processor and an AI-based upscaling technology Sony calls PSSR (PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution). In games that are patched for the Pro, this typically means a sharper picture at higher frame rates — the console no longer forces as hard a choice between "quality" and "performance" modes.

It also has 2TB of storage and support for faster Wi-Fi.

Who it's worth it for:

  • Players with a 4K TV (ideally one with 120Hz and VRR support — see our TV settings guide).
  • People who play many big-budget games and notice image quality.

Who should skip it:

  • Anyone with a 1080p TV or monitor. The benefit shrinks a lot.
  • Younger children and casual players. A standard PS5 plays everything.
  • Gift buyers on a budget. The price difference buys a lot of games.

What all PS5 models share

  • PS4 backward compatibility. The vast majority of PS4 games run on PS5. PS4 discs need the disc drive.
  • The DualSense controller, with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. Older PS4 controllers work only with PS4 games on a PS5.
  • PlayStation Plus for online multiplayer (except free-to-play games), with higher tiers adding game catalogs.
  • Expandable storage via an M.2 SSD slot — explained in our storage guide.
  • No built-in Bluetooth audio for headphones — pick a headset designed for PlayStation (see headset guide).

A word on price

PS5 list prices have been changed by Sony several times in 2025 and 2026. Rather than print a number that may be wrong next week, we recommend checking the current price and any bundle — holiday bundles that include a game are often the best value of the year.

Accessories to add on day one

  • A second DualSense if two people will play together.
  • A charging station — controllers drain faster than people expect.
  • A headset for online play.
